Denise Treizman is a Chilean artist currently living and working in New York. She has studied at prestigious teaching centres such as the San Francisco Art Institute or the School ofVisual Arts in New York, where she obtained her MFA in 2013.
She has received several awards for her work, such as the Art Slant Round 4 and 5 Juried Winner Prize (NY, 2017), the FLOW 16 Awarded Fund for Public Sculpture (NY, 2016) or the Rema Hort Foundation Emerging Artist Grant (NY, 2016). In addition, she has been selected for various artist programmes and residencies such as the AIM program of the Bronx Museum of the Arts (NY, 2015) and the NARS Foundation International Artists Residency (NY, 2014). She was also artist in residence at the Pantocrator Gallery in Shanghai’s M50 Art District, (Shanghai, 2012).
Amongst her recent solo exhibitions we highlight Denise Treizman at MEN, MEN Gallery (2017, New York) and Part Is No Object, Project +/- in Soho 20 Gallery (2017, New York). Group shows include Constructing Painting in Espacio Vista (Madrid, 2017) and SENSE: Art in Odd Places (2017, New York).
Her sculpture and installations repurpose found and ready-made objects – tyres, umbrellas, nets, fabrics, etc – often combined with clay components and weavings of sorts, which she creates in a highly intuitive manner. By using the refuses of modern society, she exposes a high-speed, throwaway culture in which commodities are easily disposed of. Precariously assembled, the works are wild and wacky yet perfectly balanced as they ride up a wall or come tumbling down across the floor.
Her painterly drawings capture the energy of her process, a condensed sample of the gestures and spirit that are always present in Treizman’s work. She improvises playfully, allowing herself to be surprised by materials and their infinite possible combinations. Working both on the street and the studio, she examines how worthless fragments can be transformed into unexpected art experiences, giving prominence to the discarded things which most people overlook.
